I almost regret not starting this Astrology and Shadow Work series with Lilith. Because if you wanna talk about some shadow shit, look no further than Dark Moon Lilith.

And like the moon,
She had a side of her so dark,
That even the stars couldn't shine on it;
She had a side of her so cold,
That even the sun couldn't burn on it.
And it made her even more desirable.

What is Black Moon Lilith?

According to darkstarastrology.com, "This is not a solid object, it is a point of alignment. The Black Moon is the apogee of the Moon's orbit, the point that is furthest from the earth. [...] Just as there is a Lunar Mean and True Node, so there is a Mean and True (osculating) Lilith."

So basically, it's just a guessed-at spot in space, based on the orbit of the actual moon. Got it? Cool.

These are all based on my personal understanding of Black Moon Lilith.

Forbidden fruit, things deeply hidden (sexuality, desires, ill wishes, vengeance, possible past life pains), glamour, self-interest, self-preservation.

What Makes the Black Moon so Great for Shadow Work?

I mentioned in my last astrology post the importance of your Moon's placement when using your natal chart to aid in your shadow work. From that post;

"Your Moon is the side of yourself you hide from most people. It's who you are when you're alone. And sometimes, the aspects of ourselves we try to hide from others, we also try to hide from ourselves."

The way I think about it, the Moon in your chart is the 'illuminated' moon, and Lilith is the 'shadowed' moon. Or the side of the moon that catches the Sun's light, and the dark side of the moon.

While the Moon is still aspects of you that are hidden, they're buried in a shallow grave--it doesn't take much to unearth them. Your Lilith aspects, however, are a bit deeper down and take a little more effort to unearth.

Siderealist.com says on the matter:

"The Black Moon takes us to a place of deep, inner darkness, the pits of our being; to make us face the dark depths of our soul and to make the choice to either heal or wallow." [x]

Perfect for shadow work!

Elsaelsa.com also has a wonderfully succinct way of summing up Lilith's energies:

"I see Lilith as the dark side of the moon. Like the moon, Lilith has needs, though not necessarily needs we like to acknowledge." [x]

How Do I Find Out My Lilith Placement?

Go to astro.com. Under the "Free Horoscopes" drop down menu, hit "Extended chart selection". Enter all your info, and scroll down. At the bottom of the page, you'll find another menu labeled "Additional objects". Select Lilith (third option listed) and hit "Click here to show chart".

Cool. So...What Does My Placement Mean?

There is, sadly, less info on Lilith placements on the internet than there is for any other heavenly body or object, etc. Even less than the asteroids. Add in the fact that there are three (!!!) different "Lilith"s in astrology. So just when you think you've found an article detailing Black Moon Lilith, it's actually Dark Moon Lilith, or asteroid Lilith. Not to mention the amount of gender existentialism that goes on in a lot of these articles.

It's a huge pain in the ass, basically.

Best one I've found so far is this old website, and this list of keywords on Tumblr.

Figuring It Out

Okay. So you have all this information. Now what do you do with it?

Compare and contrast your Moon and your Lilith and see how they relate to each other.

Once again, I'll use myself as an example (this discussion might end up a little truncated because this brings up a lot of deeply personal stuff for me, most of which I'm not willing to share at this moment in time):

As previously discussed, my Moon is in Libra. My Lilith is in Sagittarius.

Libra Moons crave commitment and coupling. Sagittarius Liliths make stupid decisions that turn out to be mistakes and then refuses to learn from them.

You can see where this is going. My poor decision making often bleeds in to my desire to be partnered up. And this isn't just a romance problem, either--these placements also effect my friendships, as well.

Just for shits and giggles, let's look at a random example now.

Let's go for Capricorn Moon (bottled up and closed off) and Lilith in Libra.

A way these two placements could play off each other and manifest is that your partner's emotions become your own. Because of your moon's placement, you've got this emotional septic tank where all your shittiest feelings go, and you refuse to let them out. But because of your co-dependent Lilith, if your partner is going through some of their own emotional turmoil, you co-opt it as a way to channel all that muck you keep bottled up.

So that's pretty much it!

Drop me a comment and let me know what you think--I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on the matter.
