If Tumblr is to be believed, there's been a surge of interest in astrology among Millennials.

And while compatibility between signs seems to be one of the most popular subjects to discuss among this (and any) group--and would probably, honestly, get me more hits on my blog--I want to talk about something less pretty and more prescient.

The Saturn Return

What is the Saturn Return?

Roughly every 29.5 years, Saturn makes a full rotation around our ol' Sun. When we talk about your Saturn return, it just means that Saturn returns to the sign it was in when you were born. This can happen anywhere between the ages of 27 and 30.

Well, That Doesn't Sound So Bad...

Perhaps not, but remember: This is Saturn we're talking about. Stern Father Saturn. What Goes Around Comes Around Saturn. I tend to think of Saturn as the Shadow Work planet, as it rules the tenth house of "baggage I don't want to claim".

Astrostyle sums it up pretty nicely in this paragraph:

During the Saturn return—which lasts 2.5 to 3 years [..]—you will come face to face with your own blocks and be forced to push through them. All the “mistakes” you made in the 28 years leading up to this seem to crystallize. Rather than repeating them on autopilot, you have a chance to turn lemons into lemonade. And if you refuse to heed those lessons, Saturn will bring a drill sergeant style smackdown. Indeed, the Saturn return starts off feeling a bit like boot camp for a lot of people. But drop and give him twenty instead of rebelling against those barking orders.  Three years later, you’ll be General Awesome or Captain Fantastic of your own kick-ass army—at the very least, you’ll be decorated with a star or two.

Holy Shit, That Sounds Terrible!

Well, I mean...maybe not. The Saturn Return is a chance to really dig deep and do the hard work that is required to understand oneself. To improve oneself. And that's ultimately a good thing.

I've singled out my fellow Millennials in this post for a couple reasons: A) Because of the nature of Saturn's rotation, many of us are either in the middle of our first Saturn return (yes--most people have at least two in their lifetime), or will soon be dealing with it and, B) we're not the first generation of young adults to question the way our parents did things, but we are the first to really be screwed by the way they lived their lives, and the systems they put in place.

I have no real proof, but my instincts tell me that the first Saturn return was when the hippies realized their empty cultural appropriation and "free love" was no longer paying off and started to settle down just like their parents did. Or that the first Saturn return was when many of the nihilistic 90's Gen-X'ers found themselves faced with actual problems and...settled down just like their parents did.

But Millennials...we're the first generation forced to face the unsustainable patterns of behavior put into place by previous generations. We're already doing the hard work, just by being born when we were.

If we can survive all of what the Boomers have done, we can make it through our Saturn return.

This Time Next Year...

...I'll be beginning my first Saturn Return at the tender age of 27. And no matter what your exact age will be on December 19, 2017, if your natal Saturn is in Capricorn, your Saturn return will begin then, too. (If your natal Saturn is in Sagittarius, you're already in the middle of yours.)

Obviously, this is why I've been thinking about the concept of the Saturn return so damn much. Because of the sign and house my natal Saturn falls in, I have my suspicions about what all will go down during this time for me. Either way, I will be keeping a Saturn Return journal--bits and pieces of which I will more than likely be sharing with you.

Until then...
